Paideia: A Concept Contributing to the Education of Humanity and Societal Well-Being :: Philosophy

Adding to the Education of Humanity and Societal Well-Being Unique: For the purpose of mankind, outward impulse must change into internal check. This is conceivable with the assistance of paideia. I use paideia rather than the obscure German word Bildung, which includes the implications of training, arrangement, and development. The center of my as of late created idea of paideia is that the teaching individual does what must be done in a specific circumstance. The individual in question works alone or along with the other. In accomplishing a work the informed individual attempts to maintain a strategic distance from any hindrance for the other. The completed work speaks to the acknowledgment of both, the person just as the other in a stage toward self-acknowledgment. This way of thinking of instruction incorporates into one single idea the two fundamental hints of hypotheses of training in European nations, to be specific the speculations of self-being and those of magnanimity. The idea of paideia is a potential response to genuine issues, f or example, the hole between the rich and poor people, the expansion of savagery, existing political radicalism, misuse of regular assets, etc. As per this circumstance, not all individuals are instructed quite well. I guarantee that the explained way of thinking of training can add to the instruction of humankind. The blend of self-being and magnanimity ensures the ideal acknowledgment of sense in a given circumstance. This guarantees the regular work of the individual and the other can grow well indeed, with the goal that both are interlaced in the outcome. I. From Outward Compulsion to Inward Control For a long time our current society has been portrayed by sociologists and rationalists as being controlled by three elements: first science and innovation, second broad communications including new types of correspondences like the Internet, and third independence and pluralism. These three qualities of the current circumstance point to the diminuation of human prospects. For on one side we live in a general public of supposed boundless prospects as for science, innovation, correspondence and individual uniqueness. On the opposite side, be that as it may, genuine reasoning and doing, genuine talk and genuine self-molding appear to develop poor or become incomprehensible. The prize we are obliged to pay for our current society, the prize of our potential outcomes is incidentally that of the inconceivability of our unique prospects, be they individual or social. So the take a stab at flawlessness exposes itself as an impromptu weakening in numerous domains of social and individual lif e.

How to Conduct a Profit Margin Analysis

How to Conduct a Profit Margin Analysis Profitability is one of the key aspects that business managers, investors and other stakeholders look into in order to assess whether a business is successful or not. A company that is profitable will be able to pay its liabilities as they fall due. Profitable companies are also capable of distributing dividends to investors. For many, if a company is not making any profit in the long-term, it would be better to halt operations altogether. Naturally, investors will also avoid that company like a plague, since there is no chance that they will get a return on their investment. Even banks and financial institutions will not even think about lending money to a business that is not making any profit, for fear that it won’t be able to meet its payments as they fall due. There are many ways to assess a company’s profitability; and there are many tools that are available to conduct profitability tests. One of them â€" and quite probably the most popular one â€" is by looking at the compan y’s profit margin, or the percentage of profit out of total sales or receipts of the company for a given period or operating cycle. © Shutterstock.com | Rawpixel.comIn this article, you will learn several things about 1) the profit margin  and 2) conducting profit margin analysis.THE PROFIT MARGINThe profit margin is one of the most commonly used and most reliable indicators of profitability of a company. Investors are particularly interested to see how the management of a company is able to generate revenue, manage its costs and expenses, and generate profits over time. It is essentially a reflection on how efficient the business is in using its resources in its operations. The main financial statement that will be used in profit margin analysis is the income statement, an example of which is shown below. The amounts are in thousands of dollars.Sales / Receipts700Less: Sales discounts, returns and allowances-35Net Sales665Less: Cost of sales-355Gross Profit345Less: Operating costs and expenses-220Operating Profit125Less: Interest and Taxes38Net Profit87Sales or Receipts refer to the gross earnings or receipts of the business from the sale of its products and services.Sales discounts are reductions in the price of a product or service, usually in exchange of early payment by the buyer or purchaser. These are presented as deductions from the gross sales.Sales allowances are reductions in the price of a product or service, mainly due to problems with the product or the service. It could be a problem in the quality of the product, or delays in the delivery or shipment. These allowances are deductions of Gross Sales.Sales returns are product items or merchandise physically returned or sent back to the seller by the buyer, due to various reasons, ranging from defects, delayed shipping, and errors in the product, as well as errors in the quantity of merchandise ordered and delivered. These are deducted from the Gross Sales.Net sales is the total sales or revenue, less the sales allowances, discounts, or returns.Cost of sales (also cost of goods sold, or cost of service) refers to the costs direct ly attributed to the products or services being sold, such as the purchase price from suppliers (in a retail or merchandising concern) and direct labor, direct or raw materials, and manufacturing overhead (in a manufacturing concern).Gross profit or gross income (also gross margin) is the measurement of the profit made from the company’s cost of sales. This income is primarily used in activities that are aimed at revenue generation in the future, such as marketing, advertising, and research and development.Operating costs and expenses (also Selling, General and Administrative costs or expenses) include all expenses of the company used in all its selling, general, and administrative activities.Selling expenses refer to the costs directly and indirectly related to the sale of a product or service, such as costs of advertising, packaging, warehousing, salaries of salespeople, communication expenses of sales staff, rental fee of sales facility, and delivery or postal costs of bringing the products to customers.General and administrative expenses refer to all other expenses that are not related to the sales activity of the business, such as the rent of administrative office, salaries of the company president and all non-sales personnel, and telephone costs used in the administrative office.Operating profit or operating income (also operating margin) refers to the earnings of the company from operations, before the deduction of interest and applicable taxes, against its gross sales or receipts.Interests and taxes or, more specifically ‘interest expense’ and ‘income tax expense’ are the regulatory and mandatory fees that are not related to operations. Interest, after all, is a finance cost, and taxes are imposed by the government, so the company is bound to pay it regardless of the results of its operations.Net profit or net income (also net margin) is said to be the “bottom line” of the company. Not only does it exclude all operating costs and expenses , it also deducts the interest and taxes that the company has to pay with regards to its sales. Most often used profit marginsThere are three key profit margin percentages that analysts focus on when evaluating a company’s profitability. For purposes of discussion of the three, let us use the sample income statement shown above.Gross Profit MarginThis is the percentage of the company’s gross profit or gross margin against its cost of sales. Its purpose is to evaluate the pricing of the products relative to the cost of sales.Gross Profit Margin     =     Gross Profit / Gross SalesChanges in gross profit can be caused by changes in sales prices, unit volume of products sold, the product mix, purchase price of inventory for sale, the amount or volume of direct materials used, the labor rates, and amount and usage of overhead. The computed Gross Profit Margin is 49.3% (= 345,000 / 700,000). This means that for every $100,000 of sales, the company has a gross profit of $49,300.Oper ating Profit MarginUnlike the gross profit margin, the Operating Profit Margin also deducts the operating costs and expenses of the company, except interest expenses, income taxes, interest income, and any gain or loss on sale of capital assets. This is why it is also referred to as “earnings before interest and taxes” or EBIT.Its purpose is to assess the impact of the selling, general, and administrative costs and expenses of the business, and how it figures in the ability of the company to earn from its operations.Operating Profit Margin     =     Operating Profit / Gross SalesThe operating profit margin equaly  17.9% (= 125,000 / 700,000).Net Profit Margin This is the ratio of earnings left after all costs and expenses have been deducted from gross Sales or gross Receipts. It answers the question: how much, out of every dollar sales, is a company actually earning?Net Profit Margin     =     Net Profit / Gross SalesIn the example above, the Net Profit Margin is 12.4% ( = 87,000 / 700,000). It basically means that, for every $1.00 sold, the company is earning a profit of $0.124.CONDUCTING PROFIT MARGIN ANALYSISSignificanceProfit margin analysis is often performed in a single company over a period of time, say for 5 to 10 consecutive years, to see how the company is growing in terms of sales, costs and profit. Similarly, profit margin may also be performed to compare two or more companies within the same industry, in order to see which company is performing better. Some also perform profit margin analysis where the profit margin of a company is compared to an industry standard, which is derived from collected industry statistics. This is to see whether the company remains competitive in the industry or not. From the point of view of investors, it is easy to see why they would rely on profit margin analysis: they want to make sure that they are putting their money on companies that are sure to earn enough profits so they can have a return on their inve stments. However, from the point of view of management, there are many reasons why profit margin analysis is important.Profit margin analysis serves as a guide in making pricing decisions.Profit margin analysis enables management to identify weak areas, such as hemorrhaging costs and ineffective revenue generation activities.Profit margin analysis between companies will help management to see where the competitor is doing things right and where it is doing things wrong.Profit margin analysis will show whether the company is able to match or beat industry standards, giving it competitive advantage.Management can also use profit margin analysis as a warning device. For example, if the profit margin is low or on a decline over a specific period, it could mean that the profitability of the company is not all that secure. This can be seen as a foretelling that it could decline even further until the company incurs a loss. Management will then have to take action before that happens.Impli cations and limitationsFor some, it would appear that the only figure that matters in profit margin analysis is the bottom line, or the final percentage or ratio that has been calculated. However, there are a lot of variables involved that must be considered, instead of focusing on just that single percentage. For example, it is possible that a company is able to maintain a high profit margin for five consecutive years. In fact, the final profit ratio is even increasing as the years went by. However, if you look beyond that final figure, you will realize that the costs have also increased exponentially over the years, while increase in sales is gradual. The profit margin has several implications, but all of them are tied to the quality of decisions that are made by management and how those decisions are implemented.Gross profit marginThis margin is an indicator of the efficiency of the management in using labor, raw materials, and overhead in the production or manufacturing process.Ex tended or continuous decline of the gross profit margin can be caused by the following:Poor pricing decisions. It is possible that the company is pricing the products too low. The company will then look into adjusting its selling prices appropriately.Mismanagement of labor costs and raw materials. The company often does not have full control of the trend of labor costs and the price of raw materials. If left unchecked, the labor costs and raw materials costs may continue to rise and eating up much of the gross income that the company is earning from its sales. This requires vigilance on the part of the company, for it to revisit its price-setting procedures every now and then to see if they can adjust the selling price accordingly.Operating profit marginThis profit margin is an indicator of management’s success in its revenue generation activities and campaigns. Usually, profit margin analysis starts with getting the gross profit margin. If it is too low, it follows that the opera ting profit margin is also very low, since there is no way that the business will gain a sizable profit, not even if the business managed to keep its operating costs low.Low operating profit margin could mean that:Operating costs and expenses have increased while sales have decreased or remained the same.Operating costs and expenses have remained the same, but sales have decreased.Operating costs and expenses have decreased, but sales have also decreased by a greater amount. If a company shows high operating margins, it could mean that:The company has effective price controls. Even if the costs increase, management is able to adjust the selling prices accordingly. The company is good at growing its sales while keeping its operating costs low or steady.Movement of the operating profit margin will urge management to review its cost management procedures: identify the causes of inefficiency and fix them, and review its pricing policies if they have to be revised.Net profit marginCompanie s usually prefer to have high net profit margin or return on sales ratio, since this presents it to be a company that can cope very well in case of unexpected downturns in the industry or economy. Unlike the gross profit margin and the operating profit margin, the net profit margin takes into account the taxes as well as finance costs.A higher net profit means a bigger “cushion” in case the business experiences a drop.High net profit margin indicates correct pricing of products and services.High net profit margin is also an indicator that management exercises good control of its costs and expenses.Meanwhile, having a low net profit margin could be because:Sales have increased but operating costs and expenses, as well as interests and taxes, have also increased much faster than revenue.Sales decreased while costs, interests and taxes remained the same or increased.Sales remained constant while costs, interests and taxes have greatly increased. There is a general consensus that, if your business has a net profit margin that is 10% or higher, you are doing very well. However, there are a lot of factors at play here, such as the industry that the business belongs to, the structure of the business, and the current state of the economy. It is also possible that the company has undergone circumstances that led to the increase of decrease of its profit margins. Some of the usual events that could bring about these movements include restructuring of debt or a redesign of the product mix or product line.Taking industry norms into account, it would not be entirely correct to assume that, if the business registers higher profit margins, it is doing better than the rest of the industry. Meanwhile, if the industry is doing well, and it is just the company that is suffering from low margins, it is time for management to sit up, pay attention and take action. If the trend of your company’s profit margin is in line with that of the industry as a whole â€" meaning, both are going down or both are going up â€" it means that it is not just your business that is affected by certain changes or events in the industry. When it comes to evaluating a company’s financial performance, profit margin analysis is certainly a very effective tool. However, be careful not to take everything at face value, drawing your conclusions just by looking at the final profit margin or profit percentage that you were able to calculate. You still have to look into the reasons for the increase or decrease in order to get a clearer, better, and more accurate picture of the business’ profitability and overall financial performance.Profit margin analysis focuses solely on a company’s profitability and financial performance; it does not tell the whole story. There are other financial ratios and tools that you may use in order to assess other aspects of the company’s growth and competitiveness.

7 Strategies for Success on the New ACT Essay

As the Director of Curriculum at Compass, I have specific advice that I would offer to students preparing to take the new ACT Essay: #1 Breathe Seriously. Just breathe. You can do this. #2 Take 10 Minutes to Pre-Write The ACT has added 10 minutes to the Writing Test. Given the complexity of this new assignment, the extended time suggests that the test writers believe you should be spending those 10 minutes pre-writing. When most students face a ticking clock, they begin writing their essays immediately. This results in what is often referred to as â€Å"throat-clearing† introductions that basically restate the prompt, sometimes in different words, but often in nearly identical phrasing. Set yourself up to wow your reader with your introduction by taking the full ten minutes to pre-write. #3 Create a System of Analysis If you ask most people what it means to analyze, they’ll tell you it means to break a thing into its parts. But how do you actually do that? Try asking the following four questions when you read each perspective: Who might hold this perspective? Why would they hold it? What if we all held this perspective? What is one weakness or strength of this perspective? Suddenly, the vague idea of â€Å"analysis† is concretized into a system of questions that you can apply to each perspective: Who? Why? What if†¦? Strength or weakness?   #4 Write Down Notes As you ask these questions about each perspective, you need to jot down your thoughts. This serves two purposes: it frees up your short-term memory (which is crucial toward the end of a 4-hour test) and it streamlines outlining. When you make notes for these questions, they will serve as the outline of your body paragraphs. #5 Use the Word I Did your high school English teacher tell you to never use â€Å"I† in your essay? He or she was probably trying to wean your class from using phrases like â€Å"I think† and â€Å"I believe,† which many believe weaken writing. College writing classes are increasingly embracing students’ usage of â€Å"I,† and in an assignment like this one, where you’re asked to describe the relationships between perspectives, clarity is often achieved through â€Å"I.† It would be nearly impossible to use your personal experience to support your ideas if you couldn’t use â€Å"I.† #6 Sell Your Examples with Details Though the essay has shifted away from pro-versus-con argumentation, it should still be persuasive. Specific details not only show the value of your position but also make your essay more interesting to read. Try to support every statement you make with a concrete example from your studies or life. Let’s use the artificial intelligence (AI) prompt cited in our complementary post about the New ACT Essay. One of the three perspectives on the proliferation of technology argues that technological advances minimize authentic human interaction. If you agree with this perspective, a general statement like â€Å"technology robs us of our humanity† is less potent than a real-life anecdote. The high-scoring student might include a story about attempting to have lunch with friends while being interrupted by chirping cell phones and text messages. #7 Power Pose If you haven’t yet watched Professor Amy Cuddy’s TED talk on power posing, do it now. I’ll wait. Finished? Excellent! Her mantra—â€Å"Fake it ‘til you ARE it†Ã¢â‚¬â€is absolutely applicable to the ACT Essay Test. Pretending to be a person who knows about the topic can help if your heart starts pounding when you read a writing assignment on a topic you don’t know much about. You’ll find that as you analyze, you will start to develop an opinion on the topic. Sometimes, the strongest rhetorical position you can take is to admit ignorance. This can be hard because the classroom has trained you to provide clear answers. Paradoxically, acknowledging the limits of your own experience can give your writing credibility. So by all means, write with authority when you analyze the given perspectives, but when it comes to your own position, it’s okay to say, â€Å"there may not be a solution† or even, â€Å"maybe we can’t bridge these divides.† If these issues were easily solvable, we wouldn’t still be talking about them. The ACT knows that, and if you recognize it in your writing, you’ll be adding the complexity that readers reward. Scoring The ACT has changed not only the assignment but also the scoring of the essay. Whereas the old essay was scored holistically on a 1–6 scale, the new essay is scored in four separate domains: Ideas and Analysis, Development and Support, Organization, and Language Use. It can be helpful to think of the first two areas as addressing content and the second two areas as addressing form. Two readers will each score each domain on a scale of 1–6; each domain score will be the sum of those two readers’ scores. For a look at the new scoring rubric, visit the ACT’s website. The Writing Test is not included in the composite score. The ACT will take the sum of the four domain scores and calculate a scaled Writing Test score in the traditional 1–36 range. The ACT will present students with three sets of scores: the domain scores, a scaled Writing Test score, and an English Language Arts score (the average of the English, Reading, and Writing Test scores). 7 Points That Your Professional Resume Should and Should NOT Have

Having a great professional resume is perhaps one of the most important things you will need. It will either set you up for failure or success before even walking into an interview. The following points will help you to be the latter! You Should: 1.  Ã‚   Be Precise Get to the point, make it simple, and don’t be long-winded. 2.  Ã‚   Use Bullet Points When Practical You should use bullet points when outlining previous job details and for other parts where you can be more concise. 3.  Ã‚   Use a Resume Template Give your resume a more professional look by using a modern template. The layout of the resume is often the first impression. 4.  Ã‚   Tailor It Make sure your resume reflects a response to the specific job listing you are answering. 5.  Ã‚   Have a Clear Header Recruiters and interviewers need to know your name, but more importantly, they need to know how to contact you. Make it easy for them. 6.  Ã‚   Add a Cover Letter In addition to tailoring the resume, adding a cover letter for that specific job will definitely help you stand out. 7.  Ã‚   Describe Accomplishments Instead of Responsibilities Responsibilities of past jobs were things you were supposed to do and can be found in any job description. Instead, say how you did them. You Should NOT: 1.  Ã‚   Be Too General Being general will not help you stand out from the rest. It will only tell the employer that you are as the next man. 2.  Ã‚   Have Inaccurate Information False information in your resume can be a felony depending on what it is. Even if it’s a small lie, if you are caught you will be fired. It’s always better to be honest and real. 3.  Ã‚   Spelling and Grammar Errors These errors won’t get you anywhere except for the not interviewing pile. Edit carefully! 4.  Ã‚   Use Fancy Fonts and Different Colors You have to stand out but in a good way. Using crazy fonts and bright colors will get you noticed, but not in the way you want. Better stick to Times New Roman or Cambria. 5.  Ã‚   Make It More Than One Page Although every country is different, if you are writing in the US style, limit your resume to one page. A resume is to show what you have done, not to tell your life story. 6.  Ã‚   Sound Too Generic Using tons of keywords and phrases that everyone else does to make themselves sound more professional doesn’t describe who you really are and what you are capable of. 7.  Ã‚   Include Irrelevant Information The last thing the human resources department wants to know or cares about are things that have nothing to do with the job you are trying to get. Keep the extras to yourself or share them with your new colleagues after you have gotten the job. Job searching and going through interviews is stressful and hard work. We wish you the best of luck on your journey to finding something you truly love. Using these do’s and don’ts will help to get you there, so don’t ignore them.

The Killer Angels By Michael Shaara - 1947 Words

The Battle of Gettysburg brought the dueling North and South together to the small town of Gettysburg and on the threshold of splitting the Union. Gettysburg was as close as the United States got to Armageddon and The Killer Angels gives this full day-to-day account of the battle that shaped America’s future. Michael Shaara author of â€Å"The Killer Angels,† tells the story of the Battle of Gettysburg through the eyes of generals Robert E. Lee, Joshua Chamberlain, James Longstreet, and John Buford, and the other men involved in the action of the battle. The historical account of the Battle of Gettysburg gives the reader a chance to experience the battle personally and not the history book manner taught in schools. The feelings and inner-thoughts of each General and the conditions of the battle are seen, heard, and felt by the reader in the historical account. Shaara takes historical license with letters, the words of the men, and documents written during the four helli sh days of the battle. Shaara also avoids historical opinion and provides his own opinion towards the Civil War and the people. The Killer Angels is centered on the period between June 30, 1963 when both the Union and the Confederacy soldiers prepare for battle around the town of Gettysburg and the 1st to 3rd of July 1973 when the battle takes place. The novel commences with Harrison, Longstreet s spy gathering information on the movement and positioning of the Federal soldiers. Negative Effects Of The Industrial Revolution - 923 Words

Englands previous success from the Agricultural Revolution gave leeway to the Industrial Revolution of the seventeenth and eighteenth hundreds. Previous landowners and investors of the Agricultural Revolution were able to start or participate Corporations and Businesses to seek great profit. New machinery and technological innovations were frequent due to the demand for faster, more efficient technology. Working class families, who were arguably the sole reason for the grand success of the Industrial Revolution, moved from their farms into crowded and dirty urban towns to work long hours in harsh factories for little pay in hopes of one day living a decent life, while the middle class gained many luxuries and lived lavish lifestyles†¦show more content†¦All these advancements in technology were arguably the best effects of the Industrial Revolution, everything seemingly was becoming increasingly larger, faster, and generally improved upon. The workers of the Industrial Revolution endured the worst of the Industrial Revolution and received the least care and appreciation, not only was there a large chance of being crushed by the machine you worked on for 16 hours a day, dirty and unforgiving work spaces led to both the destruction of a workers body physically and internally. For example, in a heartbreaking testimony by factory worker Joseph Hebergam, not only severely damaged his lungs and bones from overwork, lack of nutrition, and dust in factories, but also witnessed kids wounded and even crushed by factory machines (including his own brother) because of uncovered machinery. In addition to Joseph Hebergrams testimony, William Cooper testified against the strenuous working hours in factories, Joseph claimed they worked 16 hours a day (that is two thirds of an ENTIRE day) with one 45 minute break, if workers were to slow down in pace they were whipped. Lastly, still referring from 28 year old (who worked from age 10 ) William Coopers testimony, mentioned that he never learned to write and receive proper education due to long working hours which occupied most of his life. Negotiation Strategy Analysis Vendor Negotiations Free Essays

Most businesses incorporate strong negotiation skills, especially within the purchasing department. A company must be able to negotiate with vendors to ensure they receive the best price available on items both used and consumed by the business; this also includes hardware and software considerations. Regardless of the industry, building vendor relationships are necessary. We will write a custom essay sample on Negotiation Strategy Analysis: Vendor Negotiations or any similar topic only for you Order Now The writer will look at vendor negotiations from two different perspectives with one common goal; negotiate the best contract for all parties. The writer will then compare and contrast the different negotiation strategies as they apply to the oil and gas industry. Vendor Negotiation Process The first article is about Mark Carbrey; Chief Information Officer (CIO) for a Massachusetts-based automotive service organization. His negotiation strategies allow up and coming team members to gain valuable experience with the negotiation process (Overby, 2010). He teaches his team to treat the vendors like a partner. He also teaches them to sort out what is important for the business, and to fact check with contacts that have similar contracts to ensure a fair market price from the vendor. Carbrey also stresses the importance of acquiring the support from the board of directors down (Overby, 2010). The second article takes a slightly different approach to vendor negotiations than the first article. Joe Auer, Founder, and president of International Computer Negotiations (ICN), has over 35 years experience helping technology users do better and safer deals with vendors (ICN, 2011). Auer believes that attitude toward contract negotiation is one of the most important issues the negotiator faces. Auer’s article is a bulleted list of the â€Å"best practices† a negotiator should adhere to during the negotiation process. He uses the analogy of a pilot with 20 years experience still uses a checklist before take-off. So too should a negotiator. He reminds the negotiator that a supplier often places untimely stress on himself by telling his boss, â€Å"the deal is done† before he has confirmation from the negotiator. Negotiators must use this to their advantage. He also shows that wording is subjective such as using the word preferred instead of needed. Auer states the negotiation process begins the first time information transfers to a potential vendor. He also states the negotiator gains or loses power with every succeeding transaction (Auer, 2011). Application to Work Environment The oil and gas industry is very competitive. Entry into the market is easy but sustainability is difficult. The organization plagued by many of the same issues in information technology that most industries face. Using negotiating strategies is crucial to ensuring the best contract is both functional and valuable. The first article gave sound advice for setting the groundwork of negotiation strategy but did not explain the common pitfalls inexperienced negotiators face. The second article gave a clear checklist that a negotiator can refer to at any point during the negotiation process. Conclusion Negotiation skills are a necessary part of today’s highly competitive marketplace. Building vendor relationships through the negotiation process is a delicate process. Although there is no one way to negotiate the best contract, one can incorporate the expertise of those with experience to develop the skills necessary to negotiate a fair market price with terms that meet the expectations of both parties. The two articles featured in this paper show very different perspectives with one common goal; to educate the reader with tools used in past negotiations. Coming to the New World Essay Example For Students

Coming to the New World Essay Coming to the New World was a major advancement in the lives of many Spanish, French, and English people between the years of 1942-1629. The migration effected the lives dramatically. They will come to see that in the coming years almost everything will change from religion to their types of settlement. The role of religion was very important, for it had an immense power over the European society. Christianity converted all of Europe including the Spanish, French, and English. Christian doctrine provided a common understanding of God. The church provided authority and discipline in the society. Every village had a church, which thought that Satan constantly challenged God by tempting people into evil. Christianity had played an important role in Portugal and Spain, but it divided Europe into Catholics and Protestants. A protestant rebellion in the Spanish Netherlands drained the wealth of the Spanish and gave resources to expand into North America and brought a new impact of European and Indian people. Over time, the Catholic Church had become very large and wealthy, controlling resources throughout Europe. In 1517, a German monk and professor, Martin Luther, sold indulgences. These were church certificates that pardoned a sinner from punishments in the afterlife. He was excommunicauhujuujjujjted by the pope and threatened with punishment by King Charles I of Spain. He was protected by a northern German princess and could not be arrested. After Luther, came a French theologian from Switzerland named John Calvin. He stressed omnipotence of God and the corruption of human nature. He preached the doctrine of predestination, the idea that God chose certain people for salvation even before they were born. He appeared to Christians and said to people that they needed a personal relationship with God. Calvin believed in a God that gave what he received and also that saintly people could change government. People started to believe on Prodesism and Calvinism; people believed in things that made sense to them. All these things together had an effect on the history of the United States, for these beliefs were brought over. Calvinists won over people all over Europe. The Huguenots in France adopted it, reformed churches in Holland and Belgium, and converted people in Scotland. Following Calvinism, Puritans banned several traditional religious rites, such as Holy Communion, focusing more on sermons and ethics. They also encouraged people to read the Bible, by this, promoting extensive literacy. Consequently, Puritan migrants carried these doctrines to America. Luthers challenge to Catholicism came just two weeks before Cortes conquered the Aztec empire, and the two events remained linked (Brody, 24). Spain became the wealthiest nation in Europe, for it had all the gold and silver from Mexico and Peru. It also made King Phillip II the most powerful ruler. Since religion played an important role, Phillip, and eager Catholic, tried to wipe out Protestantism in the Netherlan ds. In order to protect their Calvinist faith, the Dutch and Flemish revolted against Spain. Phillip planned to bring back Catholicism in England and then wipe out Calvinism in Holland, but he failed. He had spent so much of his American Gold on wars that by the time of his death, Spain was in serious economical turmoil. Meanwhile, English merchants promoted settlement in Virginia. fled first to the Dutch Republic, then to New England, and then to the West. Deluxe Corporation free essay sample

What should Singh recommend regarding: * Target bond rating * Level of flexibility * Mix of debt and equity * Other Issue As for what should Rajat Singh recommend regarding target bond rating, level of flexibility or reserves, mix of debt and equity and lastly any other issues. So, firstly look into the target bond rating, in our opinion DC needs to position itself to obtain a AAA rating. At AAA grade bond rating shows that AAA bond rating is higher in unused debt capacity so at AAA bonds rating Deluxe company has a lower unused debt capacity. So, that means if the shareholders start to sell, this company may not rebound since it is in a dying industry. The company will be an acquisition target by growing electronic payment companies because of the drops out of the premium ratings. For your information, for the level of flexibility is the amount of debt DC can take on before you lose the investment-grade bond rating. We will write a custom essay sample on Deluxe Corporation or any similar topic specifically for you Do Not WasteYour Time HIRE WRITER Only 13.90 / page Based on the financial analysis, the B level is where the cost jumps the most. There is a 26% increase in costs from a level BBB rating to a level BB. As for mix of debt and equity, DC is targeting an aggressive share buyback plan. They are increasing their equity in the company by reducing shares. But because of the future of the company, they will also need to take on debt. Based on the financial analysis, they are better off taking on debt. Debt is cheaper for DC. Cost of debt ranges between 5. 47% to 12%, and that does not even include the 38% tax shield. Cost of equity is more expensive, it ranges from 10. 25% to 14. 25%, and there is no tax shield. Cost of debt after the tax change ranges between 3. 39% to 7. 44%. Lastly, for other issue knows today is 12 years after the case, and DC is still in business. CONCLUSION As we know, prior to the 1990s, the  Deluxe  Corporation  (DC), the world’s largest printer of checks as well as a provider of electronic products and services to financial institutions and retail companies, was characterized as a generally stable, family oriented business. This relatively calm situation was unsettled in the 1980s by deregulation of the banking industry and changes in technology. Deluxe is forced to adopt a business model and implement strategic objectives to stay alive. Therefore, based on the all the calculation and explanations, we have finally fulfilled all the statement of problems. As for the foreseen financial requirement for the coming years, which back then was the year after 2001, it shows that DC needs additional financing for working capital, capital asset purchases, possible corporate acquisitions, repayment of short-term debt, interest payments on long-term debt, dividend payments to shareholders and possible stock buybacks depending on the state of the stock they own. Moving on as for the financial flexibility of Deluxe Corporation, it can be concluded that the debt level of DC seems to be not appropriate which is only 5. 71% from the total capital. As what it stated in Ehibit 8, DC could borrow more debt since it cost of debt (Kd) is lower than its cost of equity (Ke). Besides, the minimum WACC is obtained at bond rating AAA (9. 86%) and the same goes the optimum debt level for Deluxe would borrow which is USD 807. 50M again at bond rating AAA. From there, by maintaining bond rating AAA, it can be seen that the minimum interest or total cost that DC need to bear is only USD 83. 81M. In a nutshell, again, it shows that DC can generate its fund in its lowest cost if it maintains AAA bond rating because through that type of bond rating, DC can generate funds by paying minimum cost of capital, quickly reach the breakeven point and can easily gain profit after that. However, this company has to diversify its business in order to stay around in this business world.

Free Essays on How To Be Saved

Romans 3:23-24 in the New International Version (NIV) of the Holy Bible tells us that â€Å"For all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God, and are justified freely by His grace through the redemption that came by Christ Jesus.† We are all sinners, and we all need justification. The Bible tells us this in many places, and most people believe that there is a right and a wrong. Therefore, if there is a right and a wrong, there must be a way to make the wrongs right again. Jesus provided the way to do this by dying on a cross. John 3:16 says, â€Å"For God so loved the world that He gave His only son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish, but have eternal life.† (NIV) So, one must believe, accept, and next, spend time with God. The most important part of the plan is probably the most simple. It requires only one thing, and that is to ask. â€Å"And everyone who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved†¦Ã¢â‚¬ (Joel 2:32). After asking, one should make a public declaration that they want to be saved, and follow the Lord. Baptism is what Jesus did, and he set an example for us to follow. Paul tells us in Acts 22:16, â€Å"And now, what are you waiting for? Get up, be baptized and wash your sins away, calling on his name.† The salvation plan is simple. It is clear, precise, and possible for most any to understand. Believe in God, repent, ask, and declare. There really isn’t anything that is difficult to understand, but yet it is hard for me to comprehend. Not the how, but why Jesus would do this for us. We killed him by nailing his hand to a tree. That has to hurt very badly. I don’t understand why someone would do this for me, and for the people that actually pierced his skin. We humans are terrible, and I would find if incredibly hard to die for anyone on this earth, but yet God died for the most terrible of people. Critique Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 750 words - 9

Critique - Essay Example There have been various incidences where music has been used asan important therapeutic tool for people suffering from mental and other kinds of health diseases and challenges (Bayley, 2010). People’s tastes and preferences for music varies from one group to another. While some opt to listen to live bands and presentations, others prefer listening to music that is recorded, as they point out that this experience allows them to listen to it repeatedly. This paper examines the concept of recorded music and how it is influencing people’s preference for leisure. It focuses on ome of the advanatges that accompny recorded music for both artists and their respective audiences; additionally, it examines how technology is influencing the music industry. Music recording refers to the process of re-creation and inscription of different forms of sound waves like singing, spoken voice, sound effects and instrumental music. Music can be recorded in two main ways, either in analog or digital systems. Analog recording is often facilitated by a microphone, which has the ability to detect and pick sound waves, thus recording them as graphic representations of the particular sound waves. Analog music recording was commonly used many decades ago before the invention of effective and efficient systems of music recording, it can store music for a long time and be listened to and watched in different places easily (Cook, 2009). Digital recording, which is an advanced form of the analog music converts analog sound waves and signals picked up by a microphone into digital forms through the digitization process. In all forms, digitally recorded music is often regarded as being of high quality compared to music recorded by analog systems. Currently, various storage devices have been developed by different companies to enable people to carry recorded music to different places

Advantages Of Standard Costing Accounting Essay

Advantages Of Standard Costing Accounting Essay Despite the advantages just noted for some applications of standard costing, there are substantially more situations where it is not a viable costing system. Here are some problem areas: Cost-plus contracts. If you have a contract with a customer under which the customer pays you for your costs incurred, plus a profit (known as a cost-plus contract), then you must use actual costs, as per the terms of the contract. Standard costing is not allowed. Drives inappropriate activities. A number of the variances reported under a standard costing system will drive management to take incorrect actions to create favorable variances. For example, they may buy raw materials in larger quantities in order to improve the purchase price variance, even though this increases the investment in inventory. Similarly, management may schedule longer production runs in order to improve the labor efficiency variance, even though it is better to produce in smaller quantities and accept less labor efficiency in exchange. Fast-paced environment. A standard costing system assumes that costs do not change much in the near term, so that you can rely on standards for a number of months or even a year, before updating the costs. However, in an environment where product lives are short or continuous improvement is driving down costs, a standard cost may become out-of-date within a month or two. Slow feedback. A complex system of variance calculations are an integral part of a standard costing system, which the accounting staff completes at the end of each reporting period. If the production department is focused on immediate feedback of problems for instant correction, the reporting of these variances is much too late to be useful. Unit-level information. The variance calculations that typically accompany a standard costing report are accumulated in aggregate for a companys entire production department, and so are unable to provide information about discrepancies at a lower level, such as the individual work cell, batch, or unit. The foregoing list shows that there are a multitude of situations occur where standard costing is not useful, and may even result in incorrect management actions. Nonetheless, as long as you are aware of these issues, it is usually possible to profitably adapt standard costing into some aspects of a companys operations. Advantages of Standard Costing Though most companies do not use standard costing in its original application of calculating the cost of ending inventory, it is still useful for a number of other applications. In most cases, users are probably not even aware that they are using standard costing, only that they are using an guesstimate of actual costs. Here are some potential uses: Inventory costing. It is extremely easy to print a report showing the period-end inventory balances (if you are using a  perpetual inventory  system), multiply it by the standard cost of each item, and instantly generate an culmination inventory valuation. The result does not exactly match the actual cost of inventory, but it is close. However, it may be necessary to update standard costs frequently, if actual costs are continually changing. It is easiest to update costs for the highest-dollar mechanisms of inventory on a frequent basis, and leave lower-value items for intermittent cost reviews. Overhead application. If it takes too long to aggregate actual costs into cost pools for allocation to inventory, then you may use a standard overhead application rate instead, and adjust this rate every few months to keep it close to actual costs. production costs at different volume levels, since this may call for the use of longer production runs that are less expensive. Budgeting. A budget is always composed of standard costs, since it would be impossible to include in it the exact actual cost of an item on the day the budget is finalized. Also, since a key application of the budget is to compare it to actual results in subsequent periods, the standards used within it continue to appear in financial reports through the budget period. Price formulation. If a company deals with custom products, then it uses standard costs to compile the projected cost of a customers requirements, after which it adds on a margin. This may be quite a complex system, where the sales department uses a database of component costs that change depending upon the unit quantity that the customer wants to order. This system may also account for changes in the companys Nearly all companies have budgets and many use standard cost calculations to derive product prices, so it is apparent that standard costing will find some uses for the foreseeable future. In particular, standard costing provides a benchmark against which management can compare actual performance. Following through all the arithmetics of variances I have pin pointed reasons for the Material Price Variance, Material Usage Variance, Labour Efficiency Variance, and Labour Rate Variance. Material Price Variance occurs a failure to purchase the standard quality, thereby resulting in a difference price paid. This will lead into bad purchasing, in which is very discomforting the companys interest such as a rush purchase for an uneconomical markets, and also pushes a purchase of a substitute material on account of non-availability of the material specified by the company. This all are related to the interdependence at variances when it ensues an event has a favorable impact on one variance but an adverse impact on another variance. For example, the purchase of inferior quality materials may account for a favorable price variance but it may also have a negative impact on the material usage labor efficiency variance due to the quality causing an increase in usage. The adverse may also be affected by inflation and general increase in the market price. In such circumstances the selling price should be altered to refract the current market. Material Usage Variances may be affected by a whole lot of reasons such as carelessness in the use of material also affect the reason of material usage in resulting excessive consumption. Which brings us to the use of defective or sub-standard material that will cause spoilage to the material. Other reasons such as a change in t plant and machinery who also results to excessive consumption of material. The adverse on the variances is due to excess issues. Managers should check the stock are securely locked away that only the standard quantity is issued each day. And its not just that, There are a few more such as : Faulty workmanship Faulty material processing Pilferage of materials Use of material mixture, rather than standard mixture Labour Efficiency Variance is affected because of the actual hours used is greater than the standard hours, and it adverse is due to the use of an inappropriate standard that should be changed. Alternatively, there may have been idletime, ten working time should be synchronized. Bridget, C. (2012).  Standard Costing.  Available: http://www.accountingtools.com/standard-costing.
